Job-hunters taking over Sanya / Cheap digs, handy location changing makeup of ‘day laborers town’

Yutaro Yamashita’s spartan room has no TV, personal computer or shower. After plonking his roller bag on the floor and rolling out his futon in his room–which measures just three tatami mats in size–barely any of the floor is visible.
But for Yamashita, 21, this room at the Senju Tamura-ya lodging house in the Sanya district of Arakawa Ward, Tokyo, is perfect.
With no distractions around, “I can concentrate fully on job hunting,” said Yamashita, a junior at Sapporo Gakuin University who came to the capital on Dec. 9 to search for a job.
For Yamashita, the daily fee of just 1,800 yen is a godsend at a time when many students from rural areas have to stay in Tokyo and neighboring areas for longer than usual as they seek jobs in a tight employment market. It is a small price for putting up with a communal shower and few amenities. (Yomiuri)
