Gallery Strenger is pleased to present “A Silent Touch of Aphrodite”, the first exhibition of ceramic works by Denmark-based artist Karin Patricia Jensen.
Scandinavian design is generally associated with simple forms, and bright colors. Its harsh climate demands comfort in housing and town planning, and its designs have always been created with its magnificent nature in mind. Many globally prominent designers are from Denmark.
This tradition of design can be found in the streets and homes of the Danish capital of Copenhagen, “sacred city of design.” Jensen lives and works in Elsinore, 30km north of Copenhagen. It is also a city made famous by Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet, which has been performed many times in Kronborg castle, a designated site of world heritage.
Jensen studied pottery and glass at the Denmark Design School, and became more seriously involved in art when she settled in Elsinore in 1997. When her first solo exhibition in Japan was confirmed, she decided to make a bowl which would be filled with kindness and love. This idea grew stronger every day, and these Aphrodite bowls were completed by “listening to her heart.” When these works were placed at the exact angle of 45 degrees from the sun, the “yin-yang” symbol appeared - the moment at which she was assured that all this was not coincidence, but had been planned in advance.
