The rainy season is believed to have begun across a wide area of western and central Japan, including the Shikoku and Hokuriku regions, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The season began three to nine days later than average in these areas, which also include the Chugoku, Kinki and Tokai regions, the agency said.
On Saturday, the agency said the season is believed to have begun in the Kyushu region and nearby Yamaguchi Prefecture in southwestern Japan. (AP)
