Japan pursues moon station by 2020

Japan is looking at sending a wheeled robot to the moon in five years and building a lunar base by 2020.
The robots would set up solar panels to generate energy and have an observation device to gather geological samples. The materials would then be sent back to Earth by rocket.
The robots would work from the lunar base at the moon’s south pole from 2020.
The plans are part of a year-long study backed by a panel of experts yesterday that will be recommended to Japan’s Government.
But it has been estimated the unmanned mission would cost $2.57 billion over the next 10 years, which could be a problem given government efforts to cut expenditure. (Herald Sun)

Young, hip and hanging out at museums

Museums in Japan are abuzz with visitors aplenty, more so than in any other nation–but they are not all solemn art lovers attempting to cultivate their tastes. Observers say the main contributing factor to booming attendances is a perception among young people that visiting museums is cool.
The four most well-attended exhibitions worldwide last year were held in Japan, according to an international survey, and the number of visitors to national museums has nearly doubled over the past 10 years.
The April issue of The Art Newspaper, a British monthly publication on visual arts, said Japan’s love of museum exhibitions is “recession proof.”
The publication’s survey of exhibition popularity, conducted annually and based on average daily attendance, ranked “The National Treasure Ashura and Masterpieces from Kofuku-ji” exhibition at the Tokyo National Museum as the most popular in the world last year, attracting 15,960 visitors per day. Returning to Japan with kids was only safe option, two mothers say

It was a typical love story for Kyoko Yamaguchi. The couple met in Europe, fell in love, married and later had a son. But the happy life she had envisioned soon turned sour. First there were the fights and the yelling, and then the cheating and violence. After nearly 10 years of trying desperately to hold on to her marriage, Yamaguchi, not her real name, left her husband.
But that wasn’t enough. Physically and mentally worn out from her husband’s abusive and stalkerlike behavior, she finally decided to take her son and move back to Japan without her husband’s consent. (Japan Times)

China’s acquisition of Sea of Japan port rattles its neighbours

China has gained direct access to the Sea of Japan for the first time in 100 years through a North Korean port, leaving the other two regional players, Japan and South Korea, deeply concerned about the communist state’s ambitions.
China made an agreement to lease a pier at North Korea’s Rajin Port for 10 years. China claims the move is purely economic. The China-North Korea deal, observers believe, complicates the UN sanctions imposed on North Korea. (The National)

Trucker busted with 260 stolen undies

Kenichi Ikeda of the city of Nagasaki has carried around three bags and a secret he could not tell his family at home - inside the bags were hundreds of women’s undergarments that he had stolen over 10 years, police said. Police arrested the 36-year-old truck driver, who allegedly had stolen about 260 pairs of women’s underwear and kept them in bags behind the driver’s seat of his truck. “I couldn’t leave them home because I have a wife and children,” Ikeda was quoted as saying by police. Japan urged to exploit its tech, pop culture

Japan’s economic and diplomatic clout has been declining for the last 10 years as China and India increasingly are seen as Asia’s economic superpowers.
But Japan seems to have re-emerged with a different sort of influence during the decade, with “soft power” growing in a variety of cultural areas, a trend referred to by some in the West as “Cool Japan.” (Japan Times)
