6 dead, 5 in serious condition due to water accidents across Japan

Six people died, five others were in serious condition and one went missing Monday following water accidents across Japan, as many people took to the outdoors as temperatures soared to 35 C or higher in many parts of the archipelago, according to authorities.
In Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, 6-year-old Jo Takahashi died after being swept away at the mouth of a river which he was visiting with his family, while Tomonori Kawano, a 33-year-old company employee, drowned at Tokyo’s Kasai Rinkai Park in a waterfront area along the Tokyo Bay. (AP)

JAXA offers glimpse of Mercury probe

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, recently gave the press a look at the almost-completed prototype of a space probe scheduled to depart for Mercury in summer 2014–a unique creation entirely covered with mirrors.
Mercury is the closest planet to the sun in this solar system, and temperatures on its surface climb as high as 450 C. Therefore the probe’s most important challenge is to withstand the heat.
The mirrors covering the probe are its secret weapon. JAXA has calculated that by reflecting the strong sunlight, the temperature on the surface of the mirrors can be limited to 160 C and that inside the probe, where its observation equipment is stored, to 60 C or lower. (Yomiuri)

Smoke-free beach opens season in Kanagawa Pref.

A beach in the city of Zushi in Kanagawa Prefecture, southwest of Tokyo, became the first beach Friday to open its bathing season in Japan’s first prefecture to enact a basic smoking ban on its beaches, effective in May.
As the prefectural ordinance bans smoking on beaches except for special smoking areas but carries no penalty, the roughly 600-meters-long sand beach has five roofed smoking areas and operators of seasonal seaside houses will patrol voluntarily to ask smokers to use them, one of them said. (AP)

Fireflies put on light show to help Kamakura shrine mark summer

Visitors to a major shrine in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, were treated to a Saturday night light show put on by 1,500 fireflies released for the event.
At Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, 10 girls clad in priestess outfits from six countries, including Japan and Russia, released the fireflies into the air at around 7:30 p.m., drawing rousing cheers from the crowd. (Japan Times)

Checks miss fake fingerprints / At least 8 have entered nation from South Korea using special tapes

At least eight people arriving in Japan from South Korea have used fake fingerprints to evade the biometric checks at immigration control and enter this country illegally since January 2008, it has been learned.
In May last year, two South Korean hostesses at a South Korean bar in Yamato, Kanagawa Prefecture, skipped work for three days with no word to their 43-year-old manager. When the manager demanded they explain, the two hostesses said, “We’re very sorry,” and revealed they were in this country illegally.
At the time, immigration authorities were rounding up illegal residents around the women one after another, and they could not go to work for fear of being caught. (Yomiuri)
