Strong winds, snow wreak havoc; 140 hurt


Strong winds and snow battered the Pacific side of the nation Tuesday and Wednesday, wreaking havoc with road, rail and air routes and leaving thousands of homes without power. According to the Tokyo Fire Department, 26 people were taken to hospitals in Tokyo with fall injuries between Tuesday evening, when it began snowing, and 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Ten people in Yokohama suffered fall and other injuries, and 46 people in Saitama Prefecture either fell or were involved in skidding accidents. The hazardous weather also brought chaos to the nation’s transport network. (Yomiuri)

1-to-1 English Instructor - Tokyo area (March start)


Gaba is looking for experienced English instructors to begin teaching in March.

Below are the Kanto area Learning Studios with openings. A complete list will be available after February 15th; consider checking back for more options.

Please review the eligibility criteria associated with each LS and state your preferred location(s) in your cover letter. Commute times in excess of 45 minutes and/or at a cost of greater than 450 yen one way are considered too far.

Certification is scheduled for March 2nd ~ 4th, again March 6th ~ 8th, and 20th ~ 22nd. Successful candidates will be asked to attend in full, so please be sure of your availability prior to applying.

***Kanagawa***

Yokohama LS: lesson demand greatest weekday evenings and particularly weekends. Availability to teach four or more days a week desired.

***Central Tokyo***

Ginza, Shimbashi and Shinagawa LS: lessons in greatest demand early weekday mornings (7:00 ~), weekday evenings (5:30 ~) and weekends. Those with experience teaching business English favored.

***Northern Tokyo and Saitama***

Kitasenju LS: lessons in greatest demand early weekday mornings (7:00 ~). Those with experience teaching business English favored.

General eligibility criteria:

Must be of native level English proficiency (both spoken and written).
Must possess a valid work-permissible visa and any necessary associated documents (eg. work permit).
Available during hours of peak operation is essential.
University graduates preferred.
CELTA, TEFL or TESOL certification highly valued.
Must be comfortable using a computer.

Arts Commission Yokohama held artist-in-residence exchange programs for the first time last year in the cities of Yokohama and Nikawa. This exhibition features new landscapes by Yokohama-based artist Rai Fujii that were created during a three-month stay in Nikawa.
