Tepco braces for power surge as heat wave nears

Weather patterns that caused heat waves from New York to China may bring above-normal temperatures to Tokyo this month, prompting Tokyo Electric Power Co. to predict a surge in power demand for cooling homes and offices.
The jet stream, which moves from the west to east, is meandering in an unusual pattern this year and causing heat waves, said Hisashi Nakamura, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Tokyo. The Meteorological Agency has forecast hotter weather in the Tokyo region in the week starting Sunday. (Japan Times)
